What a Proper Replacement Looks Like

A roof replacement is only as good as what happens between the old shingles coming off and the new ones going on. Commit Roofing performs a full tear-off on every project - no recovering over existing layers. Once stripped to bare deck, we inspect every square foot for soft spots and rot, replace damaged sheathing, then build back up with ice and water shield at all vulnerable areas, synthetic underlayment across the field, new drip edge, and precision shingle installation per manufacturer specs. Materials sourced from GAF, CertainTeed, and Owens Corning with manufacturer-registered system warranties.

Choosing the Right Material for DFW

We present options at multiple price points, but a few features are worth prioritizing for North Texas:

  • Wind rating: Minimum 110 mph recommended - DFW storms regularly exceed 70 mph gusts
  • Class 4 impact resistance: Qualifies most homeowners for 15–30% insurance premium discounts
  • Algae resistance: Important in DFW's humid summers to prevent unsightly streaking
  • ENERGY STAR certification: Reduces attic heat gain and cooling loads in 100°F+ summers

Replacing a Roof with Solar Panels

A full replacement means the entire array has to come off first - and that's a step we take seriously. We carefully remove every panel, document and label the mounting configuration, and store panels safely while the tear-off and installation take place. Once your new roof is complete, we reinstall your solar system exactly as it was - every mount, every connection, every panel back in its original position. We coordinate with your solar provider if needed, and we don't consider the job done until your system is back up and confirmed operational. Don't let a contractor rush this step - improper reinstallation can void your solar warranty and create new roof penetration leak points around the mounts.

Permits, Protection, and Cleanup

We pull all required permits before work begins - requirements vary across Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano, Frisco, and McKinney, and we know all of them. On installation day, tarps protect landscaping and HVAC equipment, and magnetic nail rollers sweep the yard multiple times before we leave. All debris is hauled away same-day. Final walk-through with the project manager and warranty registration happen before we close out the job.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a full roof replacement take on a typical DFW home?
Most single-story homes with straightforward roof geometry are completed in one full day. Two-story homes, homes with complex rooflines featuring multiple valleys and dormers, or larger square footage may require two days. We do not start a project we cannot complete in the scheduled window - we will never leave your home without a weather-tight roof overnight unless an extreme and unforeseen situation requires it.
Should I be home during my roof replacement?
You do not need to be home during the installation, though many homeowners prefer to be available for initial questions. Our project manager will have reviewed all details with you before the crew arrives. The most important logistics - materials staging location, parking arrangements, and access to the dumpster area - are confirmed in advance. We do recommend keeping children and pets indoors or away from the property during the work day for safety.
What is the difference between a recover and a full tear-off replacement?
A recover installs new shingles directly over the existing layer without removing it. While cheaper upfront, we do not recommend recovers: they prevent proper deck inspection, add significant weight to the structure, trap heat and moisture between layers accelerating shingle wear, are prohibited by most manufacturer warranties after two existing layers, and can complicate the next replacement. A full tear-off is the only way to ensure a long-lasting, properly warranted new roof.
How do I choose between GAF, CertainTeed, and Owens Corning shingles?
All three are excellent manufacturers with long track records, and the differences between comparable product tiers are relatively modest. The more meaningful decision is choosing the right product tier - standard architectural, premium architectural, or luxury - and the right performance features (impact resistance class, algae resistance, wind rating) for your home's location and your insurance situation. We walk through these considerations with every homeowner and provide honest guidance based on what will serve you best long-term.
Will my homeowner's insurance pay for a roof replacement?
If your roof has been damaged by a covered peril - most commonly hail or wind in the DFW area - your homeowner's insurance policy will typically pay for the replacement cost less your deductible, subject to any age-related depreciation provisions in your policy. We help homeowners document damage thoroughly and work constructively with insurance adjusters to ensure the full scope of covered damage is captured. We strongly discourage anyone from filing a fraudulent claim or working with contractors who offer to 'waive your deductible' - this is insurance fraud and can result in serious consequences.
